STEM in the Spotlight

“The STEM Golf lesson and mix of classroom portions and hitting different balls was fun. The students thought it was both funny and interesting to hit the ping pong balls! They really enjoyed it!”

  • Andrew Foust, STEM Sports Educational Ambassador and Middle School STEM & Careers Teacher at York Suburban School District in Pennsylvania

A force to be reckoned with

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras caught more than the ball during a game against the New York Mets on Tuesday, May 7. He was struck in his left arm by batter J.D. Martinez during the second inning. It takes around 1,000 Newtons of force to break an arm - and an average professional MLB swing averages 18,000 Newtons of force. Ouch!

Injuries like this are becoming more common as catchers inch closer to home plate to try to steal strike calls. These real life events are topics that can be turned into learning lessons through STEM Baseball. Lessons in our curriculum cover the energy in baseball, the field of play, success at the plate and more.
